So, without deleting a single post, or even word, blogger has returned me from my banishment, suffered for the crime of being politically incorrect.

Since then I've taken my political views to my own site, gotten tired of political blogging and mostly stopped even reading or watching the disgusting, Leftist news.

I'd say I'm happy to be back, but I mostly don't give a crap.

I AM still blogging, but for now at least it's all sports.

I guess it's cool to be able to write if I feel like it. I just don't feel like it right now.

Becoming

It's amazing how much more time one has when one stops reading blogs extensively. I'm finally getting back to writing "Becoming". Ok, I needed ink, too, but . . .

15,486 words is what I'd gotten down when I stopped to back up and get organized. I just printed out a copy of the MS. The next few days I'll be using my spare time to make lists of names of streets and people and what not. Maybe I'll go ahead and map out the city, too. Probably not. I hate that stuff, though it would certainly be helpful, since so muc goes on inside the city for a while.

I marvel at how much time can be eaten just replying to things on blogs not one's own. Freakin' amazing. I should have been back on this months ago.

So it'll be back to my early blogging habits, before I discovered that there were tons of political blogs. My thoughts on whatever (mostly the war and Muslim scum) and my thoughts on my own writing things that I've read. Don't like? Too fuckin' bad, go read something else.

Ack!

This week gets stranger and stranger, and I'm finding out that I'm "loved" by people I probably don't want any love from.

"Tammy" wrote to let me know that she is the woman for me. She loves my mind, she thinks I'm a hotty (based on one little picture at the bottom of this blog), and, hey, can we meet, it's ok if I'm married.

I'm reasonably sure that "ok" didn't come from my wife, though.

Tammy, I appreciate the thoughts and the kind words. Really. But, no thanks.

Bad Beginnings

I just finished George R.R. Martin's "A Clash of Kings". It's probably the most interesting book where nothing happens that I've ever read. I'll give it 7 bricks.

Now I have to dig through everything I have and see what's next. So far all I have is false starts and bad beginnings.

I picked up Mathew Stover's "Blade of Tyshalle" because I love the premise, which is splashed on the cover, "There are no rules of war". But it starts out with a very uninteresting exchange regarding a problem student at some futuristic magic school. Very boring. And a very stupid and amatuerish blunder.

Anyway, I skipped ahead, hoping that if I pick things up after they got rolling that it would be better. Wrongo, Yackerizers. Stover has a real gift for making even a savagely delivered beaten seem just another ho hum bit of happenstance. Won't be picking him up again.

So I moved on to one I've been looking forward to; Jeffery Deaver's "The Bone Collector". Starts out with some woman I don't give a damn about (how could I, I've not learned anything about her, yet), having a bad plan ride and then a bad time at the airport. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaawn. Big deal. See ya later, Jeffery. Or not.

Then I figured, what the heck, let's stick with Fantasy. I have a bunch of Robert Jordan and I've never read a word he's written. Another bad idea. "The Eye of the World" starts out making me curious, because Jordan puts us right into things just after a huge tragedy where lots and lots of people died and there was lightening and fire and massive buildings tossed about like they hardly mattered. But then his characters begin to talk to each other. Now you'd think that with all this devastation around them and all their friends newly fried, scortched or crushed to death that they would have some fairly heavy emotional dialogue. But no. They start to petty and nonsensicle bickering that takes us no place and tells us nothing. See ya when I see ya, Robert. Have fun without me.

This is a plague upon modern writing. I just read the beginning of another book (one I did not buy), by a very respected Fantasy writer. It started out with a woman I assume was the protagonist "glaring angrily" AT A GLASS OF FUCKING ORANGE JUICE!

::sigh:: What I really need is a good supply of David Gemmell while I wait for the next Kate Elliott and Jo Walton novels to come out. For now it's back to scouring my shelves. Maybe I'll read a few Tarzan volumes, or maybe one of Karl Edward Wagner's "Conan" books (yes, I know Conan is a Robert E. Howard character, but Wagner wrote several of the later novels).

Dubya Goes Down on Fat Clown Princess Bullah . . . AGAIN

Rather than protecting America and slaughtering our Muslim enemies in the field, in their homes, wherever they may be found, inside America and out, Dubya seeks instead to appease. He talks tough when he's in front of American cameras, but his actions say that he is still an oil whore and williing to sell us out to support his Arab fellows.

We neither need nor require the help of any other nation to make war on these hate filled animals. Pretending that the house of Fraud, the largest and richest terrorist organization in the world, is in any way our friend or on our side is sickening and puts American lives at risk needlessly.

It hasn't been nice knowing you, Dubya, so don't expect a second term.

NFL Rankings

Are not always what they seem.

For instance, I keep hearing brain damaged sports writers and fans saying that Denver's Offense needs to improve because they were ranked 21st last year and Griese threw 19 interceptions, but thier defense doesn't need much work because they were ranked 8th.

But these rankings are based soley on yards gained and yards allowed. Now that's a nice measure of general effectiveness, but what counts is scoring.

Even with injuries to McCaffery and Gary, no effective number 2 or 3 receivers and Smith playing with bad ankles and a slightly fractured leg, Denver's scoring offense managed 340 points. That ranks them 10th in the league. Griese completed 61% of his passes, which is excellent, and through a career record 23 touchdown passes. Not so shabby.

And guess what, Warner threw 22 INTs, Manning threw 23, and Farve threw 15. That's the three top rated QBs in the league. Only six QBs threw more TD passes than Griese. So lay off of the guy, you know-nothing twits.

Denver's defense allowed 339 points, so thier scoring D was ranked 21st.

Look at that, they allowed only one fewer point than they scored, and they finished . . . 8 - 8.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be happy as a pig in doo-doo if the Broncos' O rocks the league this year, but what they need to worry about is the other side of the ball. I think they've taken care of that. I hope so, because they could be on their way to another SB ring if they have.

So quit whining about how it was the offense letting the team down last year, and pay attention to what really matters. Yards made and denied are nice, they make for pretty comparisons. But when it comes down to winning and losing the only part of the field that counts is the endzone.

Saudi's question terror suspect

Here's a secret excerpt from the interrogation.

Interogator (who asked not to be identified): Saud bin Abdel-Aziz al-Rasheed, that is your name. Correct?

aR: I swear upon my honor as a Muslim that I had not even the slightest knowledge of such atrocities. When I saw the news on the television I was as deeply saddened as were all of our people, from the oil rich palaces of our homeland to our persecuted and oppressed brethren in Palestine.

I: (nodding) That, I think, is enough, Mr. al Raseed. You are obviously innocent of all charges, as we all know the worth of your word and your honor.

Can you really be such a simpleton, Murray? Never mind, you've made your answer amply clear by the remainder of your comments.

So you consider the 9/11 attacks, murdering children in their beds, killing old women and children on busses, slaughtering 50+ people on a train, burning churches and synagogues, blowing up people in restaurants and discos and assaulting a buss full of kids on a soccer team merely "taking crap"?

So, killing thousands of people is merely inconvenient. We should suck it up and move on. Yet stating opinions that disagree with your own makes one an enemy of civilization? Was your head this far up your ass when you were born, or is this condition something you've done to yourself intentionally? I suspect the latter, but life is full of all manner of tragedy.

As for taking the high road because "we're the good guys", well, you make it clear that one cannot overstate your softheadedness.

Let's take a brief moment to examine the stupidity of such a statement.

The low road is, quite obviously, the taking of civilian lives, as the terrorists do, and for no other reason than to either make a statement or in the hopes of breaking the will of the society being attacked.

Hmmmmmm, let me see if I can think of any other time this was done. ::scratching chin:: Oh yes, WWII. First the Germans bombed London, then the Allies bombed German civilian populations. Back and forth, on and on. All in the name of breaking the people's will to fight.

But wait, I'm not finished (though you undoubtedly wish that I was). Aside from their very ingenious, yet almost exclusively ineffective balloon bombing campaign, the Japanese never directly attacked the American civilian population. Yet we bombed Tokyo in an effort to break the will and spirit of the Japanese citizenry, then we nuked Nagasaki and Hiroshima -- two more civilian population centers.

Does any of that mean that we were not "the good guys"? Or does it mean that we were simply doing what needed to be done to save the highest number of American lives?

I can at least state my reasons for believing we should fight a certain way. So far all I've seen from you (aside from the name calling) amounts to "We should do it this way because I think it's the right thing to do". Not good enough, fellas. Not by a long shot. Get as pissed off as you need to get, but you're making asses of yourselves and not doing a damn thing to prove the validity of your beliefs.

UPDATE: Evil Stupidity vs Spine -- I crack me up. I really do.

Murray, over at War Now is throwing a bit of a tantrum, while demonstrating that his views of what war should be are more influenced by romantic fantasies than by any sense of reality. The added emotion doesn't make his views any less ridiculous, though.

I expected this, kind of, since I remember how vehemently vocal Bruce was regarding the idea that the families of "Palestinian" suicide bombers should be killed. Israel, sadly, rejected that idea -- though she has compromised and is at least tearing down the homes of these families, now.

Any way, Murray is so blinded by his personal notion of ethics that, like many Jews, he can't even see that it has become the antithesis of ethical behavior. Allowing your own people to die in the name of fair play is not noble, it's stupid and more evil than the legitimate carrying on of open and unrestricted warfare against an enemy who has no honor or conscience and does not let inane romantic delusions limit his own warlike propensities.

To disallow any tactic or weapon merely on the grounds that it is distasteful, is not fair or is too brutal only places us at needless disadvantage and, in the end, means that far more of us will die before our victory is realized.

The code that Murray would have us fight by should be a model for all the world to marvel at . . . in time of peace. But in time of war it is purely moronic. It was this code of ethics that, at least in part, saw the better part of 6 million Jews slaughtered like so many sheep during WWII. Perhaps Murray would prefer that another 6 million die, rather than allow the West to play by the same rules as the terrorists. If not 6 million, than how many? How many people have to die before we're allowed to say, "enough", and go after our enemies with the same gusto and in the same manner that they are prepared to come after us? Obviously 3,000 Americans and another thousand or so Jews isn't enough, so what is? 10,000 and 10,000? 50,000 collectively? Some combination totaling 100,000? At what point do we stop waiting for them to come for us and take the fight to them? At what point are we allowed to stop turning the other cheek and take an eye for an eye?

War is not a competition in fairness, and wars are not fought to see who can play the nicest, who can kill the fewest on the other side or needlessly sacrifice the most of their own. In warfare, Murray''s ideals are only surface noble. What good is traveling the high road if ten times as many of us need to die in order to walk there? That is the far greater evil, the far less forgivable stupidity.

NOTE: That hurt, Murray. No email. No how ya doin'? Just call me names and slap me silly right in front of the masses. I have feelings, you know? ::sniffle:: I think I need to play a couple hours worth of mindless (easy slap in that one, Bruce, don't miss it) video games, or maybe some scrabble ('nother easy one), to help me heal.

It'll take me some time to recover. I'm feeling so unloved and unappreciated.

First, the "Alleytorials" were removed (mostly because I liked what I saw happen to loading times when I dumped the comments and want to improve that some more), but they'll return either on a second blog, or on a seperate page on the main site.

Second, I've added "Colors" to my link list list. Colors will be a collection of individuals and groups who are mainstream and politically incorrect. I'd like to include blogs in it, but there are none I've found just yet. It will grow. Feel free to suggest candidates.

Ethics vs Spine

Jewish ethics demand the taking of the high road. This is too frequently taken to extremes that make Jews look stupid and cowardly. Undoubtedly many of them know this, and hanging on the their principles in the face of such criticism takes its own kind of courage.

But when, say, you knowingly sacrifice your own people in the name of ethics – for instance the raid on Jenin – then you've corrupted your own values so badly that you're blind to the sickness of your own actions.

I've commented before on Jews (in Israel) who had 1. Seen too many of their children murdered by Muslims and 2. Realized the sickeningly suicidal nature of Jewish ethics. These people then attempted to take terror to the terrorists . . . and failed. Why? Because fellow Jews turned them in, or in some way stopped them from carrying out their attacks.

Unfailingly I applaud these men and women for finally seeing what needs to be done, and having the courage to do it. And also unfailingly I am applauding the friends and relatives who turned them in, at once disappointed by their blindness and inspired by their unflinching morality that will not have them allow what they surely wish for somewhere in their hearts.

As I said, that's all been in Israel. But now it's come to America. Now we have Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, a thwarted hero who could no longer allow Jews to be murdered unavenged.

Robert intended a rampage of destruction that would have shown the Islamic community of Tampa what it is they support and cheer for when they encourage, finance and rejoice for the killing of Jews and Americans. He would have given them just the smallest taste of what real terror is, and he would have been on higher moral ground than those who knowing allow their own to be killed so that they can avoid criticism of being too harsh on their enemies.

Of course, there is still hope. What are the chances that Robert is the only Jew to finally have had enough of seeing his people slaughtered like pigs and nothing more than token actions taken to either avenge them or to see that it doesn't happen again? I think there are more like Robert out there, and eventually, one of them will succeed. And then another, and another, until there is an organized movement matching Islams insanity death for death.

Sadly, not very many, though. Because for every Robert J. Goldstein out there, there are at least hundreds of Jews like his mother who place ethics, no matter how twisted, above revenge.

However, until the Robert J. Goldsteins are allowed to succeed, Jews and Americans will continue to be massacred by Muslims. They won't stop until we make them, and the only way to make them is to make them pay for their crimes with their blood and the blood of their families.

Those funny halfwits down the hall

An intellectually challenged individual naming himself "Loki" has thought to outright attack me. He obviously realizes that he is not equipped for the task, having limited vocabulary and more limited reasoning skills, because he's called on all his silly little halfwit friends to lend a hand. Unfortunately and thei, idea of defending their own beliefs amounts to nothing more than calling me a few names that any 3rd grader could top.

They did, however, post a very nice picture of me. I'm sure they are having a group masturbation right now, while they sit around their computers, drooling over me, swapping IMs and giggling about how clever they are.

Tell you what, Loki. You send me a seriously reasoned debate, and I'll respond. Though you aren't that bright and I suspect you'll do nothing but regurgitate arguments made by others and previously refuted.

I strongly suggest that you begin by reading the Horowitz article linked a few posts down from this one, because it covers all the bases and is phrased in a manner that even you should be able to understand.

Kids and the truth about war

Bruce's indignation over teaching my daughter the truth about Islam and 9/11 brings up something that I've found more and more irritating of late. Most of the local grade school kids haven't a clue about what happened on 9/11. They couldn't even tell you how many planes were hijacked, how many American died, or, God forbid, who attacked us. Local parents want the latest news, the hardest facts, the gorey details. Yet they intentionally have their kids live with blinders on.

I understand wanting to sheild one's kids from ugliness, but to cloak them in ignorance instead is sickening. American soldiers are fighting and dying in a foreign land. They deserve to be acknowledged openly and truthfully. This isn't like any other modern war America has been involved in. This time we're fighting, literally, for our freedom and our lives. They aren't over there fighting for some abstraction. Their dying for us . . . and for our kids. Our kids should know that, and everything else about this war. How else will they ever appreciate what's being done for them?

UPDATE: There's an easy way . . .

Bruce over at War Now! dislikes my recent push toward extremism and my crossing of PC lines and calls me both stupid and foolish (Bruce, you could have just called me anserine and covered it all a bit faster). He specifically dislikes me teaching my daughter the truth about Islam and 9/11.

I understand his beef. I really do. I also understand that his religion teaches him to strive for a standard of tolerance and "ethical" behavior that I sometimes admire and at least as often see as self-defeating or even worse. I just think that he's naive and possibly delusional if he believes that his "just show them how it's done" theory of modernization for Islam is going to prevent another 9/11. Maybe guys like Bruce can make a difference in the way Muslims behave sometime twenty years or so down the road. I hope he's right and that this Kingesque dream of his comes to pass. I'll be first in line to slap him on the back when it happens. For good or bad though, what's left of the religion will no longer really be Islam -- as I've remarked before

But we aren't living twenty years down the road, and Islam is right now a religion of hatred and violence. Right now common Muslims, not just a few Muslim crazies holed up in the mountains of Afghanistan, dance in the streets when Americans are killed. Right now common Muslims, not just a bunch of scheming Hamas mad bomb makers, who are getting free medical aid in Jewish hospitals are cheering when Jewish victims of suicide bombings are brought in with their bodies torn, burned and full of nails. Right now common Muslims, not just power hungry Imams screaming in some mosque, celebrate and even commemorate as heros those who die while murdering Americans and Jews. Right now common Muslims, not just the newest bunch of al Qaeda recruits, hate us and wish us dead for no other reason than because we are Americans or Jews.

You be a "true" hero, Bruce. Because, in this case, the type of "true" heroism that you mention seems little more than living one's life in a fantasy to me, even looking that hypothetical 20 years down the road.

And if being a hero by your definition means that I have to feed my daughter some bunch of PC "Let's all just try to get along" propaganda, and hide the truth about Islam and the world we live in right fucking now, then keep calling me stupid and foolish and brand me a coward as well, because I won't do it.

Reparations

Being a white male I cheerfully tell you that I don't owe any race or denomination one damned thing. I'm a white American, but my relatives never owned a slave. In fact, only a small percentage of Americans ever did, even at the height of slavery. They were hugely expensive.

The American Civil War has been over for 130+ years. Over half of the United States life time. If that isn't long enough for the black man to pull himself up from the gutter of slavery then there isn't enough time left in all the world to do so.

I repeatedly hear, from blacks, no less, how the white man held the black man down, and continues to hold him down. I then hear that the Jew is holding the black man down, invading black neighborhoods with Jewish owned shops, then that the Koreans are doing the same thing. Is there anyone who cannot hold the black man down? Is he so weak and piteous?

And while slavery is easily one of the most vile things one human can subject another human to, I won't say that not one good thing came out of it.

While Europe had advanced into an early form of industrial society, having moved through the Ages of Bronze and Iron, Africans and South Americans where still killing each other with weapons made of sticks and stones and bones. Even today African countries are the cesspool of the world.

In Rwanda over a hundred thousand blacks were murdered by other blacks. Pregnant women were gutted with rusty machetes, their unborn children ripped from their still living bodies and mutilated. What happened in Rwanda makes middle eastern Muslims seem caring and rational. In South Africa Nelson Mandela encouraged the formation of civilian defense groups to protect citizens from the wrath of the then white government. They formed, then quickly forgot why and started destroying each other, abandoning their black countrymen to quest after fleeting power.

The majority of blacks in America today are vastly better off than they would be had they been left in Africa. African nations accept billions in aid every year from America. Most of that aid is stolen by the corrupt governments it goes to. We've repaid our debt a thousand times over. It's not Americans oppressing Africans, now, but Africans, black Africans, oppressing other black Africans, and I won't accept responsibility for that.

Actually, I have some Irish in me on my grandmother's side. If ever a people were enslaved in America, it was the Irish (the Chinese along with them, but I'm not Chinese). I want my share of Affirmative Action! I want to collect on the debt to my ancestors who helped build this country at the cost of their own lives! I want that repayment to go on until I and all my great great great great grandkids are dead and forgotten! And then I want it to keep going on.

I'm also Iroquois (Mohawk), and the Iroquois Confederacy was once the greatest of Indian nations. I want reparation for all the wrongs ever committed against my long dead Mohawk ancestors (and I want double damages for having to suffer through James Fenimore Cooper including us in his work).

And while I'm at it, 1. Slavery wasn't illegal, so what laws were broken? and 2. Tthe Nazis did have damned nice uniforms! 3. Blacks in America owe the entire civil war North a debt of blood, money and gratitude. Soon as they pay that back, with interest of course, I'll be happy to listen to their whining about how much Whitey owes them. In fact, I'm from NJ, so they owe me big. I'll be checking my mailbox for that check, every day.

More Professional Niggers

Oh that illuminated bunch who call themselves "reparationists"! How wondrously self-righteous, how marvelously bigoted, how splendidly lacking morality, dignity and intelligence. To be so brazenly the antithesis of critical thinking, tis a dream that only the most benighted may ever hope to achieve.

But enough of my blind adoration for this learned lot of sybartistic cretins. We don't want them getting big heads, now do we?

Where to start our discussion today . . . it could easily be Cynthia McKinney. She has taken professional niggerism to heights few will ever achieve, and God knows she works hard enough to supply us with evidence to prove that.

We could return to the intellectually challenged, Michael Eric Dyson. He's certainly an easy target.

Instead let us begin with New York City Council member Charles Barron, then work our way to long time professional nigger, Louis Farrakhan, and finally end with U.S. District Judge Charles Shaw of St. Louis

Mr. Barron, the good councilman from NY, says that he would very much like to

". . . go up to the closest white person and say, 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing,' and then slap him, just for my mental health,""

To be honest, I understand Mr. Barron perfectly. I'd very much like to go up to the first reparationist I see and piss in his or her face . . . just for my mental health, of course. And then, just because I'm fairly ill and require more such therapy than most, I'd like to toss them on the ground and stomp their brains out. I'm thinking that after repeating all of this ten or twelve times that I should start feeling somewhat better . . . from a mental health standpoint, that is.

My God, what was I thinking?! I just, very discourteously, went way over Mr. Barron's head with that one. You see, that was Thinking Person's Hyperbole, so he and other reparationists won't understand it. My sincerest apologies to Mr. Barron and to all of you.

Then there's the "minister" Farrakhan and his standard bucket of bile flung at anything that's even been looked at by The Man.

Farrakhan, who has, for decades, screamed about how The Man is oppressing him, yet is blind to his own lie. Yet somehow, in spite of having Whitey's foot constantly upon his scrawny neck, Loui has managed to make himself rich (at the expense of the very blacks he claims to champion), and at the same time maintain a resounding voice of descent and even maintain traitorous ties with middle eastern countries. Yeah, this hypocrite is really oppressed.

If there is any oppression surrounding Farrakhan and his followers, then it's applied directly by Louis himself, as he preaches to blacks that they are weak, that they cannot overcome, that they will never achieve anything until Whitey is made to pay and pay dearly.

Now let's take a gander at our friend Judge Shaw. After demonstrating gross judicial misconduct in a case where BLACK officers mistakenly beat a BLACK defendant (who was also mentally handicapped), the Judge found a white officer, who was not on the scene until after the beating, guilty. When the appellate judges overturned the case (and considering Shaw's social connections to the plaintiff, what else could they do?), this is what Shaw had to say

""…a majority of six white men conclude that Moran established a plausible case of, among other things, "improper considerations of his race" by a police department headed by an African American… [Section III, Item 8, pg. 10]

"The appellate minority of four judges, two white men, one white woman and an African-American man, disagrees with the majority's substantive due process analysis…""

What's clear is that if racism if at all a factor in this case, then it seeps directly from professional nigger Shaw. He isn't interested in truth, he only cares that he gets to screw a white officer, and is outraged that any mere appellate judge would dare overturn his flawed and prejudicial ruling.

You can bitch and moan that my views against reparations and my unabashed use of the very politically incorrect "nigger" makes me racist, stupid, evil, shallow or anything else. I don't really care. It doesn't change the fact that the people I've mentioned in this post, as with most reparationists, are America hating bigots who have only self-interest and a continuance of victimhood as their goals. They do not care for the health and welfare of black America, but only that they can manipulate Amercan blacks and the America political system for their own profit. People like these do more to oppress black society than any number of David Dukes would ever be able to.

I get more hits for one post than for any other except my easy meatloaf and my gravey posts (Go figure). Anyway, hardly a week goes by that this particular post doesn't have at least one visitor come looking specifically for it. It's was originally posted (untitled) on January 24, 2002. Here it is.

It's pretty fucking funny that so many people are so infinitely concerned with how fairly the military is treating the Afghan prisoners. Though really it only seems to me that it's the same people who are always looking to make America look bad, stupid or irresponsible, no matter how anserine their claims are.

The stupidity of a statement matters not one bit. If you put an emotional spin on a thing there are bound to be more people who agree with you than who don't. Because Americans in general can't think past emotion, or even for themselves most often. Do you pathetic, anti-America, terrorist loving, logically challenged, shallow minded, politically correct, spineless, piss drinkers really think that if you expose these people to every possible right granted in our constitution, give them every legal benefit, shower them with every consideration, treat them more humanely than we treat our own law breakers, that they will not turn around and massacre another 3,000 Americans if they are given the chance?

For once in your small-minded lives why don't you clean the shit out of your cranial cavity, take just one step out of the idyllic fairyland you think we live in, and give more consideration to your country and your countrymen than you do to those who you would give the freedom to destroy us if America should be run according to your shortsighted and puerile whims.

TD Watch

As I, Bronczilla, predicted, Terrell Davis is is calling it quits, not because he wants to, but because his knees are telling him he has to and because he knows it isn't fair to his team mates and the Broncos franchise to keep holding on when he's no longer able to perform on an every day basis.

TD and Mike Shannahan are giving us, the fans, one last favor. Before being placed on IR for the season (meaning he cannot, by rule, play again until next year), TD will wear Broncos orange and blue one more time when he comes on for Monday night's game against the 49ers, in uniform. Will he take a single snap? I'm thinking yes, if the pain in his left knee is not too great, just one play to let him go out like a player.

Keeping with the spirit of things from yesterday (in a lame effort to put something up before I disappear for most of the next two days), here's a comment I wrote for A Long View regarding his post titled "Enlightened Enviromentalism". Damn, if I keep this up I might start renting myself out as a guest blogger!

"Our social/political system is full of stupidies like this, but, at least to me, for good reason. Frustrating, but good.

The "Shoe in the Door" theory of progress keeps not only enviromentalists but others (gun advocates, abortion rights advocates) from giving a nod to what anyone can see is a reasonable and helpful idea (trigger locks, an end to partial birth abortion), because they rightly assume that more "reasonable" legislation will follow, moving things slowly but steadily to a point where it suddenly seems reasonable to just go ahead and abandon conservation efforts altogether, or make guns or abortions illegal completely.

We don't play an all or nothing game here, because if we did we'd end up with situations like we see in Israel (where "Palestinians" would prefer either an Israeli state and no Palestinian state, or a Palestine but no Israel and no living Jews, rather than live peacefully with two states).

So rather than maintaining a healthy middle (one where niether side is quite happy, but the common good is well served), we instead have constants of two extremes battling to maintain those extremes, while steadily trying to eat away at the other extreme and at the same time deny the other side even an inch of ground.

Who needs common sense when it's so much fun to make asses of ourselves on a never ending basis."

To outline, or to write by the seat of your pants . . .

Today seems to be Regurgitate Comments Day

Anyway, here's a reply I wrote on another blog in response to the writer's (Rob -- blog name and link deleted) thoughts on the hassle of outlining and the voices in his head (currently a snooty Steven King), telling him he's an idiot and a hack.

I no longer believe that "whatever works" is best for the individual.

Personally, I DETEST outlining. I'd rather you run an exacto knife over a goodly portion of my skin. And then pour vinegar on the wound. But I've found that the pain of outlining is worthwhile.

That isn't why I've changed my mind though. After all, it isn't like I've published anything worth speaking of. You mentioned Steven King and his disdain of plotting things out in advance. But take a look at his work. Even his most ambitious writing, The Stand, and The Dark Tower series, have a good deal of breadth, but very little depth. And has anyone ever mistaken ANY of his characters for anything that even resembles a real person? No. They're all role players. Every last one of them. Even his most detailed histories are largely linear. The path they take may wiggle a bit, but there's nothing to it beyond what we see before us.

So, if that is one's ambition, then great, no outline is the way to go. But that isn't enough for me, and it isn't for most other writers I know.

Since you use S.L. Viehl and Holly Lisle as your own examples, I'll stick with them. Do you think King's work compares favorably with theirs? I don't mean does he sell more. Obviously he does and has. His novels are quick to read and easy to digest and the reading public loves that. But do you get the same sense of something larger lying in wait for you, something more to be discovered, secrets yet to be revealed, a sense of relative completeness to the whole? Now, do you find those things in the work of Viehl and Lisle? I'm guessing that you do.

Let's go one further. Have you ever, I mean even once, been made to stop and think while reading one of King's novels? I've read about half of what he's written. I confess, the Dark Tower series has been somewhat satisfying in this respect. But that is a great exception, because this quality is missing from the rest of his work. At least what I've read. Ask the same question about the novels written by Viehl and Lisle. I'm betting that what you find, as I have, is that unlike with King's writing, being made to think is not the exception, but the rule.

So, if you just want to write, by all means do whatever works for you. But if you want to be as good as your favorite authors, then do what they do. Not because they do it, but because it works and because it produces writing that is generally superior to writing produced otherwise.

"Frankly, Alley Writer, I disagree very strongly with your evaluation of King's writing. He's a superior storyteller with a great deal of depth to many of his works. Perhaps not all, but no one can hit it out of the part every time at bat."

Is it possible to take seriously anyone who thinks that the body of Stephen King's work in any way demonstrates depth, either of the worlds the stories exist in, or of the characters populating those worlds? I think not.

I find myself questioning Rob's reasoning ability, when he focuses his rebuttal on an aspect of my comments that in no way affects the conclusions I make. And I shiver at the attitude! My goodness, you'd think I'd just spit on his mother.

I could have used any writer as an example, Grisham or Clancy would have been just as good. But his own example used King, who is famous for a lack of depth, especially character depth, so King is the obvious choice to use as my example. Agreeing or disagreeing with my opinion of his skills is not required for my points to be understood.

Since this is Rob's own discussion it should have been easy for him to see that I was speaking specifically on the benefits of writing with an outline as opposed to writing spontaneously and that King's abilities as a writer are only incidentally important to my comments.

So, Rob, if you'd like to give it another go, and focus on the issues that you yourself opened the discussion with, please, I'm all eyes.

AW by another name . . .

. . . would be no less irritating

This was written as a comment in response to a post on Cut on the Bias. As frequently happens, I love my own words there so much that I feel compelled to push them upon you, here.

The pseudonym thing is a non-issue being played for far more than it's really worth. It makes for interesting conversation, but not much more.

Does anyone really believe that the use of a real or fictitious name is an accurate indicator of reliability? I've read three posts on this (I haven't gotten to Page or TLB, yet), and all three (Steven Denbeste, Susanna and Live From the WTC) mentioned bloggers who use pseudonyms and are considered reliable. Each mentioned different bloggers.

Certain members of the anti-warblogger crowd are notoriously unreliable, and happen to use fictitious names.They are who and what they are – small-minded, spiteful, hatemongering liars. Likely they've been this way all their lives and have just now found an adequately amusing outlet to vent their ugliness. Would they be different if they used their real names? I suppose it's possible, but I very seriously doubt it.

Let's face it, unless you happen to be someone like Matt Welch or Ken Layne, -- someone with a professional career at least somewhat in the public eye -- there is little, if any, benefit or disadvantage in using a particular name.

I use "Alley Writer" because the original intent of my blog was to help promote my main website, AlleyWriter.com. And I've been getting back to that, putting more book, reading, literary material up (though still mixed in with politics and other things)

AW has also evolved into "his" own personality. One I thought of long before I started my blog. There's more to that, but . . .

This is the internet, and just because someone claims that the name they use is their real name doesn't make it so. We can't see each other. Most of us don't know each other. People lie about who they are in chat rooms and IMs all the time. They pretend to be someone and something they are not. They even use pictures of other people and claim it to be themselves. And overall that's found perfectly acceptable. We expect it. We mostly ignore it. Why should blogs be any different? I only care about the reliability of the content and how it's presented. Who wrote it is of minor importance.

Apologies

A reader who was offended by my recent rants on smoking, as well as my linked past rants, demands that I apologize for "attacking" smokers and for lumping them in with drug users/dealers/growers and drunk drivers.

First, the apology. I'm sorry, very and sincerely sorry, that your parents passed on their genetic predisposition for stupidity to you. This is a tragic and ugly multi-generational flaw, one which undoubtedly afflicted your grand parents and great grand parents on back to time immemorial. You have my heartfelt sympathy.

As for "lumping" you in with druggies and drunks, go back and reread the post you're whining about. If you take your ADHD meds and concentrate reeeeeeeeeeeeeeal hard, you'll see that I was rambling (writing without constant focus) in that post, not saying that there is no difference between smokers, druggies and drunks. In that post I covered a lot of ground that was thematically related, but I was not attempting to claim that each group is the same.

There, you happy now? Because I'm all about customer service, you know.

Mr. Junk Science and Self-Interest

Smokers love Steven Milloy, because their cause is his cause. Yet looking into Mr. Milloy's qualifications and writing it's easy to see that he's no more the authority than any other untrained, inappropriately educated schmoe.

We'll just overlook his inane stance that non-smokers can inhale all the same poisons and carcinogens as smokers and suffer no ill effects. I guess he thinks that not sucking on a cigarette directly throws up some kind of superduper anti-sickness shield that the evil smoke and poisons simply bash themselves senseless against to no effect upon the body they wish to attack.

That sounds, and is, ridiculous, I know. Yet, threatened by a valid and significant discovery that proves non-smokers are indeed at direct risk of lung cancer from second hand smoke, Mr. Junk Science, Steven Milloy, uses the very Junk he claims to abhor to "prove" his point.

A study by Dr. Stephen Hecht has found that women who live with smokers have levels of two chemicals (NNAL and NNAL-Gluc) that are five times higher than what is found in women who live with non-smokers. This is a direct result of breathing in and metabolizing a known carcinogen called NNK.

But Mr. Milloy has, for years, disputed the fact that non-smokers are at any risk whatsoever from second hand smoke. He therefore has considerable stock in "disproving" this research . . . at all costs. Even the cost of intellectual dishonesty.

Any of you who have followed the above links will have noticed a few things. Mr. Milloy is no scientist at all. He's a statistician. Second, Hect IS a real Dr and a real scientist, hence the "Dr" before his name (notice there is no such attachment before Mr Milloy's name. Third, Mr Milloy's various rantings against anything he deems unworthy of public belief, are frequently supported largely by vague generalities and the condescension of very unscientific supporters . . . judges, for instance.

I'll use his own article as an example of his bias and "logical" slight of hand.

"Hecht reported that the women who lived with smokers had blood levels of two chemicals – NNAL and NNAL-Gluc – about five times higher (that's 500%) than the women who lived with nonsmokers. "

Milloy starts by immediately using his word choices to imply a lack of credibility. Rather than simply telling us that the NNAL and NNAL-Gluc levels were higher, he say that "Hecht REPORTED" that they were higher, indicating through implication that there is some doubt as to Hecht's honesty and integrity as well as the validity of his scientifically found and supported findings.

Similarly, he claims the levels were "about" five times higher. When men like Milloy start rounding, you can bet that the actual numbers were above rather than below that 500% mark.

"Based on finding the byproducts of NNK in the women exposed to secondhand smoke and NNK being associated with cancer in lab animals, Hecht concluded to the Associated Press, "A number of studies have shown a connection between environmental tobacco smoke and lung cancer. Our study provides the first biochemical support for this data.""

This is a great favorite of Milloy's, one that makes him jump up and down and scream like a monkey. Notice he inserts "in lab animals", because as far as Milloy is concerned -- as you'll see if you read his site --, any finding "in lab animals" automatically discredits any medical finding as it relates to humans.

So, next time your kid gets into a box of rat poison stored below the sink, don't bother calling Poison Control. It doesn't matter. You have no proof that just because it's poisonous to mice that it's also poisonous to your child.

"If spin were science, Hecht would win a Nobel prize."

Notice something very important, here. Milloy does not actually come out and say that Hect's findings are false, or even flawed, he simply accuses Hecht of "spin" and again implies that Hecht is a liar. He just keeps heaping on the vituperation, stacking one little verbal dig atop another. The entire article is constructed in this way.

"Biochemistry aside, Hecht's grossly misrepresented the state of the science on secondhand smoke and lung cancer. A credible link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer remains elusive despite more than 40 published studies. "

"Biochemistry aside"? Yes, Mr. Milloy, let's ignore the biochemistry, because that's the very aspect of the research that blows your own twisted beliefs out of the water. Let's instead pretend that Hecht is using your own tool, verbal slight of hand, to misdirect us away from the real value of his findings.

For the sake of this discussion, let us assume that Dr Hecht did in fact exaggerate the known association between second hand smoke and cancer. Really, it's irrelevant. Why? Because Hecht's research proves on its own that there is a connection. It needs no other support. But that doesn't suit Milloy's purpose, and throws a good deal of egg on his face, so he pretends that what's important lies in another direction.

Next, and here's were considerable evidence of Milloy's hypocrisy can be found.

"The largest-ever study on secondhand smoke and lung cancer, published in 1998 by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, reported no statistically significant increase in lung cancer risk associated with exposure to secondhand smoke."

On his site and in his articles Mr. Milloy – Gosh, I just can't help but continue noticing the absence of "Dr" in his name – is constantly beating into us that statistics are not science. He is quite insistent on the inability of statistics to prove anything. Yet look at the above paragraph. He relies explicitly on statistics to prove his own believe that second hand smoke has no connection with cancer.

As with that paragraph Mr. Milloy harps heavily on his belief in the lack of credibility, based on a JUDGES word (And this particular judge had a strong grounding in relevant sciences, right?), that various reports were flawed.

Ok, again, let's assume that his aspersions are correct. It doesn't matter, because Hecht's research alone proves the connection. It doesn't stand or fall based on what's come before, but is evidence enough by itself.

Then there's the very minor omission of the fact that many, if not most, of the "studies" Milloy claims dispute any connection between second hand smoke and cancer were either performed directly by or sponsored by companies like Phillip Morris. The conclusions were set in stone before the studies even began, and you can bet that the results of any "studies" that contradicted what Phillip Morris desired never made it to the general public and were appropriately manipulated or shutdown as soon as it became clear that the desired result was not going to materialize through valid means.

Let's take a look at just a few of the areas in which Mr. Milloy, through his writing, claims to be expertly qualified to make judgements of the validity of health and safety claims.

Ground Zero health ramifications – Hormone Replacement Therapy – Organic Farming – Poisons -- Chemical Engineering – Nutrition – Radiation – Cloning – Global Warming – Pharmaceuticals and the list goes on and on.

Kind of a jack of all scientific trades, huh? Quite an accomplishment for a man whose education, at best, only brushes up against the disciplines he claims to have mastered.

So, all you smokers hide behind Mr Milloy's bias if you must, but don't expect the rest of us to take him seriously.

I've been wondering, where would we (America specifically, and the world in general) be as far as military tech if we'd allowed Patton to have his way and we invaded Russia at the end of WWII. Much of our current technology, especially Naval, tank and space technology, was the result of Cold War paranoia. How far behind would we now be if not for that? How much harder would the war in Afghanistan be without those advances?

Smokers

New York's Mayor Bloomberg has wisely made plans to eliminate smoking in most public places -- including, thankfully, entrances -- and intends (at least it seems so) to extend that ban to beaches and parks. I applaud him.

Some are concerned that this is a rights infringement and feel that smokers should be permitted to smoke any damn place they like, and to Hell with the consequences to the rest of us. Well what about our rights? Why is the smoker's right to kill themselves slowly, placed above our right not to partake of that poison with them? Why is their right to pollute their own bodies placed above their children's rights to grow up without having their own growing bodies poisoned as well?

If there is a violation of rights, then it is smokers who are and have for decades been violating those rights, by forcing everyone around them to partake of their foulness and live (or die) with the consequences.

American Hero Dies

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher James Speer, 28, of Albuquerque, N.M, who was injured in an ambush while hunting for al Qeada cells in Afghanistan, died of injuries received in that ambush, which became a 4 1/2 hour gun battle.

For those of you who think that this is some kind of fantastic comfort, remember that after his kidnapping, Pearl was beheaded on tape and that tape was viewed by millions on the internet and on CBS television. His body was then hacked into ten pieces, something his murderer was quite proud of.

This was no open casket, cry over the dead and give him one last kiss goodbye. This was an ugly end to an uglier series of events that occured for no reason other than Pearl's nationality and his nationality -- he was an American Jew.

Political Correctness: The anti-Morality

What Political Correctness really teaches us is not an abhorrence of hate, but self-hatred and abstinence from morality.

Recently I saw Phil Donahue, one of the most amoral, PC men in America, berating the Catholic church for its lack of acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle. It isn't enough that the church provides unlimited access and upward mobility within the priesthood for homosexuals, going so far as protecting homosexual pedophiles above any consideration for the safety of children within the church's cares.

Donahue would have them sing the praises of sucking a shit-stained dick, dancing in the streets at the same time.

What Let's-all-suck-a-dick Phil really wants, is a uniform code of abhorrence to be embraced by us all, whether we like it or not.

Here are some other people who would crush all traces of morality and individuality within American society.

1. National Council for the Social Studies wold have us believe that Usama bin Laden is projection of his time as a misunderstood, troubled youth, the product of school boy cruelty, suffered at the hands of American grade school bullies.

Notice, we are directed to loath ourselves as Americans, rather than this massmurderer.

2. Terrace, British Columbia, Canada, is being labeled as immoral because it dares stand up to the abomination of homosexuality and deny gays their official holiday within city limits.

3. Connecticut is punishing the Boy Scouts for refusing to join the Catholic church in becoming a haven for homosexual pedophiles.

4. A Massachusetts girl is instructed to bring in a book that speaks of Christmas traditions. Then is told that she can't share her story because it speaks of . . . Christ.

There are more. Of course there are more. And this is only from one article. Go, read. Express your rage and indignation.

Those of a Politically Correct nature would not have us end all hatred. They would only have us redirect that hatred inward, and at the same time see America become morally amorphous. Ok, you caught me. But I have good reasons. Or at least reasons.

1. I've been working more, and when I do have time I'm either too tired to blog, or just don't feel like spending what little time I have reading, reseraching and typing away for all of ten people to read.

2. It's all the same ole same ole; The Saudi's are terrororists but Bush wants to suck Abdullah's cock every chance he gets; Al Qaeda is still on the loose and still a big meany; U.S. businesses are raping investors and employees; Bush admits that Irag needs an ass kicking, but Abduallah needs another hummer, so Saddam will have to wait, blah, blah, blah.

Professional Niggers and Reparations

Nigger is one of those words that enlightened people run away from. I, however, am not especially enlightened.

Reparationists are flat out, hands down, no two ways about it, niggers. And they like it that way. In fact, they're professional niggers, whorishly niggering themselves in full view of the public eye, thinking that if they make big enough monkeys of themselves that the rest of us will play along, be intimidated, take pity, and heap money upon them in mountain high piles.

This by itself would be simply irritating, but of no great consequence. But these professional niggers aren't satisfied to wallow in their own excrement. They want every Black in America to wallow with them.

To them welfare is seen as an inalienable right. To them, drug abuse as a symptom, not of personal weakness and irresponsibility, but of white sponsored oppression. To them, speaking proper American is not a sign of a person's pride himself, but of his failure to embrace "Black culture" (never mind the self-destructive, self-defeating nature of that "culture", it should be embraced at all costs).

These same people marvel at the sluggish progress Blacks have made not only in American society, but throughout the world, including and especially in Africa.

For these morally and intellectually bankrupt men and women ignorance does not mean that a fellow black is uneducated or uninformed. It means that one does not share their niggerish views on reparations. A black man who disagrees with their stance is not wrong, but instead he is "the white man's boy". They cannot debate logically, so instead they turn to ad hominem attacks.

Half measures get them killed

Israel is back in Gaza, this time sending in tanks and troops.

This is a half-hearted effort on Israel's behalf – as is almost always the case. They'll do just enough to stir things up, but not nearly enough to break the will of local "Palestinians" to support Hamas, and not enough by miles to disrupt Hamas' operations.

In short, Israel is getting exactly what she's asking for, like a parent who screams at a bratty child to behave, then only pays lip-service to the child's punishment for disobeying. The kid quickly learns that there are either no or minimal consequences for his bad behavior, so continues to be a little prick, becoming progressively worse.

We have no spine, and they know it

China is itching to test U.S. resolve to defend Taiwan.

U.S. actions and attitudes toward Israel as she struggles to defend herself against relentless terrorist activity shows us that China is right to believe that we will not only turn our backs on Taiwan, but act aggressively against her if she should have the nerve to fight back against China.

The Chinese tested U.S. resolve when they first attacked our spy plane, then denied the pilot access to a landing strip, then held our servicemen captive, then ransacked the plane (which was sovereign U.S. territory), then would not allow us to fly the plane out, and then we paid them over $34,000 for the privilege of their aggression. They humiliated us at every turn during that incident, and Bush kept sucking Chinese dick every chance he got.

Should China attack Taiwan he'll get down on his knees and suck them off again. What we should do is make sure we're prepared for things to go badly, then use overwhelming force to hammer China's military into dust the instant they attack Taiwan. But we won't.

Enemies

Here's a look at some things that caught my attention, but that I don't have time to write a full post on.

Rat poison in bombs. "Palestinian suicide / homicide bombers build low-tech chemical weapons.

And while Bush and Rummy are finally figuring out that the PLO and PA are terrorists, the two men are still consistently the first in line to condemn Israel when she retaliates against them. Hypocrites both, and inconsistent, too.

Saudi's are our enemies, but we're too much the oil whore to care.

Iraq pretending it'll let UN weapons inspectors in again. At least Mr. Annan isn't buying into it this time – which surprises me greatly. The deal will die on Annan's conditions, because it was never sincere to begin with, just another stalling tactic.

Regarding Iraq, the NYT, as usual, isn't letting a little thing like reality stand in the way of its Leftist agenda.

It's looking, at least by implication, that the Times will be very disappointed.

And if you think the U.S. isn't toying with this idea, think again.

Related to much of this: I wasn't on line for the last week, but I watched a little TV (CNN and MSNBC) while I was at my Dad's. I was mildly surprised to hear a very strong anti-Muslim (especially anti-"Palestinian"), pro-Israel, pro-attack Iraq NOW sentiments coming off the American street. Americans have spent so much time swallowing Dubya's BS about not taking things out on our peace-loving Muslim neighbors that I didn't think the public in general would ever really adopt my harsher views on Terrorism, the Middle East, and Muslims. I'm glad to see people acknowledging the real threats to our safety, and hear them pushing for meaningful action against those threats.

First they told my sister, Barb, that she has anal cancer, and that it doesn't spread and is highly treatable. But, oops, she has liver and lung cancer, too. She went to the hospital tonight, and might not be coming home. Blogging isn't seeming like much of a priority just now, and may not again for a while.

Thankfully no one who knows me has said anything like, "It'll be ok." Because I'd have to scream in their fucking face, it is absofuckinlutely NOT going to be "OK". It's not OK now. It won't be OK a week from now, or a year from now, or ten, or twenty.

The Alley Writer Art of Reviewing

That's a fairly pretentious title, but not nearly as pretentious as the brain damaged members of the American literary community. That includes the vast and arrogant, yet largely untalented collection of modern "literary" writers, their pompous, self-absorbed bands of worshipers -- these worshipers call themselves "literati". I, more properly, call them illiterati --, and the ever-prosaic, mindlessly applauding NY Times style reviewers that plague places like Amazon.com.

This merry little world of self-perpetuating, literary inbreeding is currently in a tiff over a review written by Mr. Dale Peck in the National Review, covering the most recent literary travesty to be written by Rick Moody, The Black Veil: A Memoir With Digressions.

As this Salon.com article points out, Peck's review trashes not only Moody's current corruption of the written word, but all of his previous work, as well as the works-entire of a gazzillion other acclaimed mutilators of American fiction.

Mr. Peck is a flaming queer and an asshole (no pun intended), and proudly so on both accounts. Disgusting on one hand, irritating on the other. But this has nothing to do with the truthfulness or accuracy of his views and statements regarding Moody's work and the general state of American literature. However, if you read through the Salon piece, you'll see numerous quotes from various illiterati trying to make it seem that Peck's homosexuality and lack of interpersonal skills both undermine his credibility. This is blatant intellectual dishonesty, but typical of the "logic" used in standard illiterati support for their steadily decaying world.

I agree with those who say that one should include any author's strengths, no matter how minimal, along with their weaknesses. I harp on this matter constantly, only for opposing reasons.

If you've ever taken a gander at the typical reviews written by the typical illiterati, you'll notice at once that 1. they are full of fluffed up positive yet blind, pretentious and meaningless generalities, 2. they venomously attack anyone who would dare speak truthfully about any "literary" novel's shortcomings, attempting to make things sound as if failings are actually strengths, and anyone who disagrees is just too stupid to "get it". 3. they fail to admit to even the most minor faults within the work they are critiquing. This isn't only true about the Amazon.com illiterati, but about those who review modern, and even classic literature, on their personal sites, and especially within American colleges.

Mr. Peck has his own pretensions, of course, placing himself grandly before us all as the lone and shining savior of this sickeningly blighted literary world. But he is also a voice of truth, shouting out against the absurdities and crassitudes of an increasingly arrogant Illiterati.

He is, however, hardly alone in his criticism of modern American literature. B. R. Myer did an absolutely wonderful and more even-handed job -- and managed to be a good deal more informative -- of giving a very broad view of modern American literature and its failings.

And of course there is the main AlleyWriter.com site, which is far superior to anything Mr. Peck produces, though considerably beneath Mr. Myer's offering.

Diablo II

Yes, when I'm ignoring my blog I'm often playing this damn game.

Anyway, I bought the "Battle Chest" version, meaning that it came with the Expansion Set included. The upgrades of the Expansion game largely are good and make it worth installing immediately. You can always opt to play the regular game when you start a new character.

Diablo II is a much more enjoyable and interesting game than the original Diablo. The graphics are better, the items are cooler, the story is larger, and, coolest of all, you can have a hirling.

But where you could drop anything you liked on the ground in Diablo, in Diablo II you have this tiny "Stash" that hardly holds anything (and this is even worse in the non-Expansion game). It's highly irritating.

Another irritation is that they give you a lot of stuff that you can use or sell, but hardly any space to carry it, so you spend at least half of your playing time running back and forth from the "Quest" to the town to Identify and sell all the stuff you find.

The levels – Normal, Nightmare, Hell – that you progress through in cycles (each time you complete the game with a certain character, that character advances and you start over) are good and bad. Even "Normal" takes too freakin' long to go through if, like me, you don't have unlimited time to spend playing games. They (the levels) are great if you're an obsessive game playing freak with no life, though.

The real problem with the levels is that Blizzard (the company who produces the Diablo games) goes out of their way to make the game progressively less appealing as you advance. You'll find a wealth of so-so items, but very little of any usefulness, making the higher lever quests a pain in the ass.

For instance, in "Nightmare" difficulty you are penalized 40% of your resistance (fire, lightning, cold, poison). Then in "Hell" level difficulty you are penalized an ADDITIONAL 100 percentage points, putting you at negative resistance, while at the same time almost all the monsters now have resistance of some sort, and all the unique have two immunities, usually one of them is to physical damage, which makes life for the Barbarian a real bitch, and they the unique monsters (the real baddies) usually have cold attacks in addition to their normal attacks, which make you slow as hell and easy prey. At the same time, the game is still not giving you anything extra, so as you keep getting your ass kicked and your hireling keeps getting killed and resurrected (by Hell level it costs 50,000 per shot to resurrect him or her), your cash starts to get impossibly low.

If you play it very smart, and have some luck, Hell level areas are still beatable, but it will take several hours to clear any area of monsters. Unless you are the above mentioned no life having obsessive game freak, it won't be worth the time and effort to hang out in Hell level. I deleted my Hell lever character and am moving on to try a different character type.

And the literature brags about the game having armor with six sockets (can be upgraded with upto six gem, runes or jewels), but I never saw one piece of anything with more than 4 sockets, and THAT was extremely rare. You'll also find reference to all the wonderful "Elite" weapons populating "Hell" difficulty level, but good luck finding those, too. They're about as available as 100 pound, long-legged Dachshunds.

Blizzard seems to cater more and more to the freaks, and less and less to the normal guy and girl who just want a few hours of distraction. I suspect that Diablo III will be extremely cool, but maybe not worth the time and hassle of playing through even the "Normal" difficulty.

The Southern literary journal, Oxford American, is moving from Mississippi to Little Rock Arkansas.

This is interesting for a couple of reasons.

John Grisham will become a part owner. Cool. I love seeing authors involved in things like this. Especially small-time stuff that makes it obvious they aren't doing it for the money, but because they love what they're doing.

The other reason is this, OA isn't (as the article points out) the first publication to move to Arkansas. I'm wondering if this is the beginning of a trend for small presses in general. Will Arkansas, or places like it, become a kind of small press New York? Considering the overall lack of profitability and the hight rate of failings in the small press world, it makes sense to take advantage of Arkansas' considerably lower real estate values.

I'm betting that we see a small exodus over the next few years. So sayeth me. So shall it be.

Talk about Human Rights violations. Peru just admitted to "sterilizing" 200,000 or so Indians.

Now some group of bleeding hearts, the kind who think that America is the world's fucking social conscience, will demand that we "take action" against Peru. They won't have the first idea about what "action" should be taken, how it should be implemented, how we should go about verifying its effectiveness, or enforcing its strictures, but they'll still make their silly demands, as they always do.

I confess, that part annoys me. But what really gets to me is knowing that whatever the U.S. might decide to do (which I hope will be not a damn thing), these VERY SAME people will be screaming at the top of their lungs that we're "needlessly destroying the lives of the common Peruvian in a vain and immoral attempt to (A) regulate Peru's internal affairs (and/or B) punish the same corrupt government that we so recently claimed as our ally", or some such idiocy.

Was this all very sickening? Yes. But why does that make it America's concern?

I find myself of two minds. One the one hand I'm screaming mad that this traitorous piece of shit, who helped to murder CIA agent Mike Spann and whose hatred for America lead him to take up arms with al Qaeda, who supported with every means at his command the attacks that occurred on September 11th 2001, is going damn near free.

On the other hand I see this as the government acknowledging that in U.S. civilian court the rules of evidence are against them. The judge undoubtedly told them this in the strongest possible terms. They were saving their case. If they thought they had a realistic chance of making the Terror charges stick, they'd never have cut this inane deal. So, thank Dubya and the Justice Department for deciding to try this in Civil rather than Military court. And remember this come election time. I damn sure will.

None of this legal nonsense makes the result any more palatable, but I can understand why it happened this way, and I know where to point my finger. This is just another sellout of America by Dubya. One of many. I won't forget.

But according to Dubya's logic, that wasn't a legitimate target (shame on Daddy Bush) and we should be apologizing and, as the U.S. so often does, paying Iraq reparations. Didn't contribute to peace, you know.

Bullshit, of course. Political figures are legit military targets, and if their families are with them, then they become legitimate targets as well.

As an aside, this is the part the really cracks me up,

As you all know by now, Zacarias Moussaoui wants to plead guilty and has admitted his connection to al Qaeda and his fealty to Usama bin Laden, and that judge Leonie Brinkema told him to sit on it for a week and maybe work a plea with the Feds. Ok, I can follow all of that, but his reasoning is insane. He wants to say that he's guilty because a guilty plea would save his life (no, it won't), and because it will let him tell what he knows. Unilateralism Revisited

Is the U.S. acting in an increasingly unilateral manner? As I've said before, I hope so (there seems to be a problem with archiving AGAIN. Please scroll down to the Jul 10 post titled, "Just say no . . .").

Even I, however, find farm subsidies and steel tariffs to be counterproductive to the greater good. Farm subsidies less so, because keeping American farmers large and healthy is a kind of insulation against famine should the War on Terror break out into a much larger conflict. But farmers are largely irresponsible in their planting specifically because they know that the more acres they plant, the bigger their subsidy checks will be.

The steel industry, however, should be allowed to die. If it can't compete with the world markets, then it has only itself, its unions and its union workers to blame.

Aside from that, screw the Euro-whiners, and the Arab-whiners, too.

Johnny Taliban the Panty Wearer

. . . will have another day in court, and if he has his way, he'll be walking free afterward. My fondest dream is that he gets set loose, and that fifteen minutes later a vigilante mob kicks him to death in the street. Then, every one of the heroic citizens will go free themselves, either because not one person will admit to having seen anything, or because, as in the case of the LA riots post Rodney King, they will be found individually innocent by reason of being swept up in the "Mob Mentality".

Mr. Panty Wearer grew up in a home where his parents preached hate for America to him daily. It was no accident that he embraced Islam, which allowed him an outlet for directing that hate, nor was it accidental that he became a member of al Qaeda, which offered him the means to put action behind his hatred. And he wasn't in that basement because he was just an innocent bystander in the uprising that killed a CIA agent. He was there because he was an active and willing part of that uprising.

Why is that last important? Because by that time he can't claim that he was ignorant of the 9/11 attacks, nor that he was unaware that American soldiers were involved the retaliation.

He was also taken prisoner after fighting, against American troops, in a heavy gun battle (too bad he didn't have a fist-sized hole ripped through his guts then). So he, at very least, knowingly fought against American troops twice. Does anyone really believe that he didn't have every intention of killing as many Americans as he possibly could during those battles?

Mr. Panty Wearer is not only scum, but he has willfully and actively worked to kill Americans, and will proudly do so again at the earliest possible convenience. In addition to being a hatemonger and a humiliation to his country, he is a continuing clear and present danger, and should be put to death, either by the government directly, or by the citizenry that he would be so very pleased to massacre.

UPDATE: Johnny Taliban the Panty Wearer has pleaded out of a life sentence and gotten all the terrorism charges dropped. I hate that. But he can get up to 20 years for the two charges he plead guilty to. If he gets that maximum I'll be pretty happy, and I'll be laughing daily as I think of him as some prison goon's bitch. By the time he gets out of prison, his asshole will sag so much that he'll be able to use it as a purse. 20 years of high protein shakes and humiliation for ole Johnny boy. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Daniel Pearl

Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the man who plotted Daniel Pearl's murder, was found guilty and sentenced to death. Three of his lackeys, Salman Saqib, Fahad Naseem and Shaikh Adil, will spend their lives in prison.

Or not. All of the men have several appeals coming, and considering that at least half of Pakistan fervently supports anti-Musharraf policies and that the piggies are is heavily pro-Terror, these convictions will very likely be overturned and the men go free.

At the very least, Ahmed's sentence will be reduced to Life, and the rest will go to prison and enjoy a life of relative celebrity.

Farrakhan's Stick Your Finger In The Man's Eye world tour

Farrakhan a supporter of terror? Perish the thought, you infidel bastards! He's just out spreading the love and peace of Islam. Ok, so he's visiting known supporters of terror, like Iraq, Syria , Lebanon, Libya, Iran and "Palestine", as well as the U.S. hating countries of North Korea and Cuba. Yes, he's been advised by the State Department that his visits will be used as anti-American propaganda, but that's part of the point, right? To get himself publicity, to help these countries build their rhetoric against the U.S., and to declare his solidarity with them.

So he's expressing his anti-America hatred and his open and outright support for these Terror merchants. So what, what does all of that prove? Of course, to the Left it proves nothing, because the Left is willfully ignorant on such matters. But to those of us with open eyes and with IQs over 10, it shows glaringly that Farrakhan and the Nation of Isalm are nothing but American agents of Terror.

Of course Farrakhan (along with his headcase wife) has proven that his grasp of reality is . . . tenuous, believing that 1. He has been in contact with Little Green Men, and 2. that these Spacemen are pro-Black, pro-Islam, and here to help him destroy White America.

And maybe all of that helps explain his enthusiastic support for the economically destructive policies of another Lord of Terror, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. Mugabe has been seizing the farms of white's around his country, and giving those farms to blacks.

This is obviously malicious, but why is it economically stupid? Because these blacks are unable to produce, they haven't a clue about how to run a farm, and so Zimbabwe is now suffering a famine on an apocalyptic scale. But none of that matters to Farrakhan. What matters to him is sticking his finger in Whitie's eye. He's so obsessed with his delusions of a world wide white conspiracy that he can't see past his petty need to express his spitefulness at every possible opportunity. The Left, especailly the far Left, is currently a haven for idiocy. If I thought a certain Lefty had made a valid counterpoint to something I'd blogged, I'd be happy to link the piece. It just hasn't happened very often, and I expect that it won't. In fact, in a move inspired by Howard Stern and others like him, it is now my policy to delete stupid Lefty comments from my blog when I find them. Civil discussions carried out respectfully, of course, are another matter.

You may not have noticed this, but blogs are almost exclusively a personal thing. This one just happens to be MINE, meaning that views expressed in such a way that they are either in line with my own thoughts, or make me think, get lots of face time. Those that aren't, get ignored. Don't like that? Start your own fucking blog.

In Turkey it is, for now, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. But in what looks like an attempt at a bloodless coup, former Foreign Minister Ismail Cem has attempted to force Ecevit out of office. Will it work? Probably not, but it'll be interesting to watch what happens in this supposedly Democratic country.
